If you plan on racing the Intermediate course – this is for Cat 2 OBRA level riders. They won’t check your category or enforce your self placement. Please note that the Intermediate course is 16 miles long, more than double the distance of what the NICA high school category HS1 and HS2 race. There are several on our team that have the training, conditioning, and endurance to do the “medium” course. If you choose to do the 16 mile course, I HIGHLY recommend you preride the course, at a normal pace. You will need to be able to pace yourself for over two hours, at least. This would be a perfect time to practice eating and drinking, as this would be a more intense activity, if this is your first race at this distance.

I think everyone, should at least try going out and doing the short course. If you are a brand new rider, I would go out and preride the course. Our advance riders last year, who raced the short course did it in an hour. The beginner riders did the short course race between 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours. This distance is what the high schoolers do at a NICA event. I just want to provide some perspective, if you are trying to determine what category and distance that is right for your teen. I encourage everyone to participate, as this is an amazing event, and it is so awesome to see our athletes, their families participating. This would be a perfect first race for any of our parents and/or coaches who are beginner to intermediate skilled riders, wanting to try racing.

The team director is not charging for race fees for Juniors (under 18), but they will need to purchase a one day OBRA license for $5.
