Team culture/objective
We are a NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) sanctioned team within the Oregon League. We accept all that have a passion or a curiosity about mountain biking with other teens. We accept all experience and fitness levels. There are no try-outs or benching. Everyone on the team participates. We are an inclusive, supportive group of middle and high school student who ride, who's primary goal to have fun, challenge ourselves and each other on and off the trail. Thru this team experience, we gain friendship, trail stewardship, skill development, and physical activity outside, with other like minded individuals.
Programming is based on group ride dynamics, skill development, and games. We group riders based on on age skill/experience levels and their goals. If a teen is interested in racing competitively, or just to challenge themselves, we will provide the resources, so they are prepared for these events. We do not require attendance, but have found those who show up consistently, focus on skill development, are better prepared for racing, and our longer weekend rides. As riders improve their skills, demonstrate self risk management and control, they will be able to ride longer and/or more advanced level trails.
We are not an elite development team or do not ride extreme/technical trails or downhill routes requiring shuttles. We understand that you don’t need a team to enjoy riding a mountain bike, but we have discovered there is a certain synergistic energy that is created by youth riding with their peers and with coaches that are there to support and encourage them
If your not sure if this is something you/your teen would enjoy, they can try one of our week-day team rides.

Team dues and NICA /Oregon League fees are paid to TWO different organizations.
$305 - Oregon State League/ NICA Student Athlete National fee
The fees covers participation in NICA/League programs and events (i.e. insurance, coaching resources, 4 races, GRiT rides). These fees are due when you register your teen thru the PitZone. We do not receive any funding from these dues or from NICA to operate the team. League scholarships are available, but you need to register your teen first, before applying for the scholarship. Otherwise, they have no way to credit your student's account, if you haven't registered.
$100 - Klamath Falls Composite Team Fees
These cover team expenses, team supplies, and some of the out of pocket coach certification costs, and some scholarship funding, and other costs to make this program affordable. Many of our coaches, do not have teens in the program, and volunteer 40 to 100+ hours in one season. Fees also allow the team to cover small per diem and race weekend costs, OTB101 annual training and other training costs.
Fees can be paid when you register via online, or you can pay by check, Zelle, or cash. Please make checks made out to Klamath Falls Composite. We ask that this is paid once your teen starts to attend team rides. Do not bring team fees to pay at Zach's Bikes.
Team scholarships and payment plans are available for those who need it. When you sign up your teen, please indicate that you will need this.
Team Jersey - ($50 to $90) all team members are required to purchase a jersey. We are able to offer this at wholesale pricing. In order to get wholesale pricing and pass this on to team members, we have to meet minimum purchases levels. This will be due before we order jersey in early June.
For new team members, if you would like to try one team ride, you can with a waiver and before paying any fees, to see if our program is right for your teen. You will need to arrange this ahead of time, to make sure we have the proper coach & rider ratios.
Equipment costs - varies depending on what you currently own and what is available.
WHAT GEAR IS REQUIRED?
In order to safely participate in team practices, weekend rides and races, the following gear is required:
- Multi-speed bike in good working order appropriate for mountain biking*
- Helmet that fits properly, and not damaged and less than 5 years old
- Closed toe shoes
- Bike kit (small bike pump, tube, tire levers, etc.)
- Water bottle or hydration pack
- Eye protection (sunglasses or eyeglasses)
* Mountain bikes purchased from department stores (Walmart, Target, Fred Meyers, Big 5), are not safe for mountain biking. Many are too heavy, too uncomfortable, and poorly manufactured.
All bikes used for practice, must be inspected for safety by Zach’s Bikes. There is no charge for the inspection, but please do this as soon as possible, as they may recommend repairs to make the bike safe to ride.
We will not have teens ride on a bike that is not safe and/or not appropriate for the trails that we ride. No exceptions.
Please do not let cost, prevent your teen from participating, let us know what we can do to assist.
We have a few team loaner bikes in only a few sizes, available for teens who are unable to obtain an bike. These are available on a first come first basis and will require an application and loaner agreement to use. We try to reserve these for families, who without this, wouldn't be able to participate. If you just want to borrow a bike, to see if your teen will enjoy it, please only use for one or two weeks. If your teen is hooked, then they should have their own bike.
If there is something you need, or don't have, let me know, we will do our best to help you. Many team members upgrade their equipment, and are happy to either hand down or sell bikes/equipment they have outgrown. We also have an inventory of used riding gear and clothing, that is available that has been donated.
How do I join the team?
You will be registering your teen with TWO organizations.
-
StackTeamApp - Registration
- Registration and StackTeamApp sign up is done at the same time.
- Returning students, just fill out the registration form, update their grade, school information, and jersey style and size. You can pay online at that time. If you want to pay by check or cash, you can bring to the beginning of season parent/team meeting or first ride your teen attends.
- For New student athletes this is an online team management program that we use to communicate to the team, coaches and parents. This is a private network only available to paid and registered riders’ households and coaches. If you do not sign up your rider here, they cannot join our rides.
- We will send you two “Invites” - one from NICA and another from StackTeamApp. You must “join” both. email lillian.kfcmtb@gmail.com requesting to join.
-
Registration with NICA is done thru the “PitZone” - opens up April 1st!
- All the legal stuff and agreements are signed off here
- Payment of NICA/League is done through this site.
- Riders will not be allowed to ride with the team until all payment and scholarship arrangements are made.
- .
- All riders must be registered in the PitZone and have paid all dues (or have made financial arrangements) before joining their first ride. No exceptions.
- If you want to ride with the team, before deciding to join, please arrange this with the Team Director/Head Coach to get a signed waiver.
If registration is full, you will be placed on our waiting list.
