Program changes for 2026 - KFC open to 5th graders!

31 Mar by Lillian Schiavo-Gilmour

In 2026, KFCMTB is opening our program to 5th graders!

Adding younger riders to our program will change how we organize some of our ride groups. Given that both 5th and 6th graders will be new to the program, and developmentally similar ( physically and socially) we will be grouping these grade levels together and separately from our 7th and 8th grade riders.

Our 5th/6th grade programing will align with KFCMTB and NICA missions; however, it will be tailored to meet the social and developmental needs of our younger aged riders.

The purpose of this program is to introduce local youth to the sport of mountain biking; create a fun and welcoming space for riders to make friends, grow skills, and challenge themselves; and foster lifetime participation in sport and exercise. To this end riders of all experience and skill level are welcome and encouraged to participate. Did I also mention, having FUN?!

We will continue to group similar experience levels and teen objective together, but with the understanding that we may need to make exceptions from time to time to adjust for attendance and coaching levels. Every practice, we start with a set plan, but we typically will always need to adapt and modify, to accommodate the athletes that show up that day.

Please note that this is new programming for our team and the League. This will be a learning experience for our coaches, and the team. I'm sure that at times, we may make a mistake (or two). We will treat those as learning opportunities. We will also access throughout the season, what is working and what isn't, and make changes that are best for the TEAM as a whole, while also recognizing the needs of the individual rider. If you have any concerns, or have any constructive feedback, please do not hesitate to speak with our Head Coaches (Zach and Lillian).

Oregon League Races:
* RACEs are optional for all riders, including elementary school riders.
* Coaches will encourage but never force or pressure a rider to race.
* There are no changes to the 6th grade race experience.
* 5th graders are invited and encouraged to participate in the Oregon League races.
* 5th graders will race as their own category in waves 4 and 5.
